Maiden Voyage of resurrected Giles IMAC

2:02

J.D. Porter crashed this Giles IMAC plane more than 8 years ago and it has been languishing in his rafters ever since. Martin Sherman and Rick Lindsey have been nagging JD for years to fix it and bring it out to fly. So, JD called our little bluff and fixed the crash damage and then showed up with airplane in hand. After some engine tinkering (thanks to Martin of course), JD handed the transmitter to Rick and wished him luck. It should be noted that earlier that same day three airplanes “Had gone to that great Hanger in the Sky”. Rick screwed up his courage and closed his eyes and took off to what was a very uneventful flight. That is , right up to the time the airplane was being tested for balance and the engine suddenly coughed and died. Rick was heard to mutter something or other and did manage a fairly graceful landing. The post mortem showed the fuel tank to be corroded from long disuse and the brass clunk line failed.

Danny Stanton Memorial Float Fly 2016

15:46

The Rogue Eagles RC Club sponsored the Danny Stanton Memorial Float Fly at Agate Lake, OR, May 6-8, under perfect skies! This year thirty-nine pilots got to show their stuff by flying gas and electric aircraft with floats and quad copters over the lake, and racing R/C boats on the surface. Attendance was bolstered by the number of visitors who came to watch the fun and maybe chat with a pilot! The event culminated with a drawing with more than $1,000 worth of prizes graciously donated to the club by Danny Stanton's daughter, Cindy, in memory of her Dad. Aerial videography and production by Larry Cogdell using a Yuneec Q500 with a Yuneec CGO3 custom made 4K camera with a 115 degree lens (good-bye fish-eye). Well done, Larry!

For those of us who remember the beginning of the space race, this video is especially meaningful. Larry Cogdell has accumulated autographs of some of the earliest pioneers in the space program and pilots of some of the most unique aircraft to grace the skies. Do the names Benjamin Davis, Jr., Chuck Yeager, Alan Shepard, John Glenn, Neil Armstrong, Ron Evans, John Young, Bob Crippen, Sally Ride, Bob Bishop, Burt and Dick Rutan, Jeana Yeager ring any bells? See their pictures and read about their incredible achievements. Oh, and did you know that Larry was a BOMARC rocketeer in the Air Force?

The Quadcopter is custom made by an Oregon company named XPro Heli located in Bend. Larry bought the first production model called the XP2. It has an all aluminum frame, Quadrino control board, Cobra motors, 10 x 4.7 props and uses a 3 cell 3300ma LIPO with a safe flight time of 6 minutes. It is carrying a GoPro Hero2 HD video camera which was used to shoot the videos. Check out their web site for more details at www.xproheli.com. Larry Cogdell's Habu EDF over Agate Field

4:39

The Habu is an Electric Ducted Fanjet from ParkZone. This one was built by Larry Cogdell and customized with 3 classy modifications: (1) a new black and red on gray paint scheme, (2) new landing gear with oil filled shocks from Vigilante RC, and (3) a light kit by RC Lander that includes red LED afterburners. Larry says his plane has been clocked at 75mph. For the trivia buffs in the crowd, Habu is a Japanese word for certain venomous Asian snakes and was an early nickname for the SR-71 Blackbird recon aircraft! Vid by Bret Pearson.

Scale T-28 trainer graces Agate Skyways

4:46

Larry is very pleased with his scale T-28 piston trainer by Airfield. This beautifully detailed bird features retractable sequenced landing gear, working engine cowl flaps and regular flaps. Larry emphasized that all of this is completely stock. He says she flies extremely well and floats in easily with those flaps. The T-28 was a popular trainer used by many branches of the armed forces. Vid by Bret Pearson.

Up in the sky. Its a bird, its a plane...WOW, its Calvin Emigh's SuperHero, SUPERMAN! Calvin spent many long hours building and testing this Superhero using numerous internet resources and phone calls for data as to how to build, set up and fly the unusual Superman. One interesting twist on this model is the fact that it uses two separate electric motors and props to control yaw in place of a rudder. Calvin says it flies like a dream and it was a great hit with the crowd at the Air Show. Vid by Larry Cogdell.

Rich Hume's Sport Ugly Stik

2:44

Rich Hume has spent hours breaking in an Evolution 15cc gas engine that per directions required a few gallons of fuel to properly seat the moving parts. Unfortunately, an engine of this type uses practically no fuel and Rich has spent hours in the air going through not quite a gallon of gas. Add to that the recommendation to mix the ratio at 20%. A nice rich oil mixture allows the engine to ease into the break-in but it also causes tuning and running problems. This 2-1/2 minute video shows Rich (and some admirers) finally getting some performance out of his “Stik”. Vid by Rick and Sarah Lindsey.

Maiden Voyage of Nieuport 17

4:21

The first flight of any model airplane is usually a nail-biter where the builder is feverishly going through a mental checklist of all the things that can go wrong. Virtually every system on an airplane is required to work close to perfect the very first time otherwise bad things happen. I built this Balsa USA 1/4 scale Nieuport 17 in 3 months during a long, wet, cold, Oregon winter and took it out for its first flight on one of the few sunny days in February. Martin Sherman did the tuning duties. The first flight was without incident; and more important, the first landing left the model in the same shape as the take-off. The three cylinder, 1.70 cubic inch Saito sang sweetly. Videography by Sarah Lindsey.

It weighs in at 28 lbs wet, has an all composite airframe and pneumatic retracts and brakes. The turbine is a JetCat P70 made in Germany that puts out about 17 lbs of thrust. At max power, the turbine spins at 153,000 rpm. Bruce estimates the top speed to be in the 120-130 mph ballpark, but says it flies nicely at reduced throttle, probably in the 90-100 mph range. Bruce Tharpe was lucky enough to be at the controls for the first flight. After some squirrely high-speed taxi runs and correcting the overly sensitive nose wheel steering, the flight was nearly picture perfect. A few clicks of up trim was all it needed to fly arrow straight. The passes shown in this video were done at about 2/3 throttle. The first landing approach resulted in ago-around, although the jet actually touches down momentarily. She returned safely to Earth on the next approach, and later made two more flights. Sarah Lindsey tried to position herself so viewers could see the actual pylon when the airplane made the turn and so the racers could see how well they were judging where to make their turns. Unfortunately, because of the wind, we became more interested in keeping the little racers from being blown away or colliding so no one really was shaving pylons real close. Vintage RC - Flying with Reeds

9:24

Back before transmitters had proportional controls and joysticks, reed transmitters used switches for all flight controls. At the 2015 VRCS Fly-In, Bruce Tharpe brought a reed emulator for everybody to try. The reed emulator shown in this video was developed by Cal Orr to operate like an old-style transmitter from the '50s or '60s. Instead of joysticks, reed transmitters use switches - elevator on the left and rudder on the right (it also has a switch for throttle). The emulator plugs into a modern transmitter so it can be used like a buddy box. The plane is a Digester, a Don Mathes design that was published in the December 1964 issue of RC Modeler. This model was built by Bruce Tharpe, Sr. Flying site is Agate Skyways near Medford, Oregon, home of the Rogue Eagles. Vid by Bruce Tharpe.
